How Did Louisville Come to Be?
Louisville owes its existence to a stretch of rapids along the Ohio River known as the Falls of the Ohio. Located just north of the city, the falls posed a barrier to boat transportation in the late 1700s, requiring travelers to stop and portage further downriver. Several communities sprang up along this stopping point, including Louisville, which was fully incorporated as a town in 1780. This area is still scoured every year for its amazing fossil beds. Scientist are still finding new species of animals and plants we didn’t know existed!
Louisville & Baseball
In 1864 a gentleman named J. Frederick Hillerich, started a little wood working shop in Louisville. This would quickly become the place where all Louisville Slugger bats were made. Some of the greatest baseball players since the beginning of the game have set historic records using Louisville Slugger bats. Still to this day there is only one working woodshop and it is still in downtown Louisville.
